🛡️ Safety first: the international safety standard for cricket helmets is BS 7928:2013, and the ICC requires it in international cricket. If you play hard-ball cricket regularly, check the product label or ask us whether a helmet meets this standard.

How to choose a cricket helmet

  1. Get the right size. Measure around your head about 2 cm above your eyebrows. Helmets usually come in small, medium and large (plus junior sizes). It should feel snug, and not move when you shake your head.
  2. Check the grill gap. The gap between the peak and the grill must be small enough that a ball can’t get through. Adjustable grills let you set this correctly.
  3. Choose the grill material. Mild steel is strong and affordable. Stainless steel doesn’t rust and is used on many mid-range helmets. Titanium is the lightest and most expensive.
  4. Look for comfort and ventilation. Vents and moisture-wicking padding keep your head cooler in Indian heat, so you’re less tempted to take it off.
  5. Consider a neck guard. Neck (stem) guards attach to the back of many helmets and add protection behind the ears and neck.

⚠️ When to replace your helmet

  • After a serious hit: a hard blow can damage the shell or padding even if it looks fine. Replace it.
  • If the grill is bent, loose or rusty.
  • If it no longer fits snugly, especially for growing children.
  • Never modify the grill or remove padding; it weakens protection.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my cricket helmet size?

Measure around your head about 2 cm above your eyebrows with a soft tape and match it to the brand’s size chart. The helmet should be snug and not move when you shake your head.

Is a titanium grill better than steel?

Titanium is lighter and rust-proof, which many advanced players prefer, but it costs more. Stainless steel is a great middle ground. Fit and the correct grill gap matter more than the grill material.

Do kids need a helmet for leather-ball cricket?

Yes. Any child batting or keeping up to the stumps against a hard ball should wear a properly fitting helmet, along with gloves and pads.

What is BS 7928:2013?

It’s the British Standard for cricket helmets, which tests impact protection and prevents the ball from passing through the grill. The ICC requires it in international cricket.
