How to choose badminton shoes
Running shoes and regular sneakers are built for moving forward. Badminton is mostly sideways: lunges, quick split-steps and sudden stops. That is why a proper badminton shoe matters. Check these five things:
- Non-marking gum rubber sole. It grips wooden and synthetic courts without leaving marks. Most indoor courts and academies insist on it.
- Lateral support. A firm upper and a stability plate (like Li-Ning’s ProbarLoc) stop your foot rolling over during side-to-side movement.
- Cushioning. Look for named cushioning such as Yonex TruCushion / Power Cushion, ASICS GEL or Nivia Duofoam. It protects knees and heels on landings.
- Low weight. Lighter shoes help you reach the shuttle faster. Premium models like the Babolat Shadow focus heavily on this.
- Snug fit. Your heel shouldn’t lift and your toes need about a thumb’s width of space. Badminton shoes often fit slightly tighter than casual shoes, so try your usual size first.

Expert tips from our stores
- Keep them court-only. Wearing badminton shoes outdoors wears down the gum sole and picks up dust, and you lose grip fast.
- Replace when the grip goes. If you start slipping on a court you know well, the sole is worn. Regular players usually need new shoes every 6–12 months.
- Wear proper sports socks. Thick cushioned socks improve fit and reduce blisters. Try shoes on with the socks you play in.
- Try before you buy. Sizes vary slightly between Yonex, Li-Ning, Victor, ASICS and Nivia. Visit any of our 6 Prokick stores, or WhatsApp us your foot length for advice.

Frequently asked questions
Which are the best badminton shoes in India?
For most players, the Yonex Blaze 5i (around ₹2,600) and Li-Ning Halberd Strike (around ₹5,000) offer the best mix of grip, cushioning and durability. On a budget, the Nivia Verdict 2.0 and Yonex HY Ultra-I are excellent under ₹2,000. For advanced players, look at the Babolat Shadow series, Li-Ning Ranger Force or Hundred Phenom.
Can I use running shoes for badminton?
It isn’t recommended. Running shoes are designed for forward motion and usually have soft, high soles that can roll during sideways movement, which raises the risk of ankle sprains. Many courts also don’t allow them because they can mark the floor.
What does “non-marking” mean?
A non-marking sole is made from gum rubber that grips indoor courts without leaving black scuff marks. Most indoor badminton courts and academies only allow non-marking shoes.
Which is better for badminton shoes: Yonex or Li-Ning?
Both make excellent badminton shoes. Yonex is known for its Power Cushion / TruCushion comfort, while Li-Ning models such as the Halberd Strike add stability plates and offer strong value in the mid-range. The best choice depends on your foot shape, so trying both is ideal.
How long do badminton shoes last?
For someone playing 3–4 times a week, about 6–12 months. Using them only on indoor courts makes them last noticeably longer.
Should badminton shoes be tight or loose?
Snug but not painful. Your heel shouldn’t slip when you lunge, and you should have about a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe.
