How to choose batting gloves
- Right hand or left hand? “Right hand” gloves are for right-handed batters and “left hand” gloves for left-handed batters. The difference is extra protection on the thumb of your top hand, which takes the most hits.
- Pick the right size. Brands usually offer youth/boys, small men’s and men’s sizes. Gloves should feel snug, with no empty space at the fingertips, but not tight across the knuckles.
- Match protection to the ball and your level. Tennis-ball cricket needs very little protection. For leather-ball cricket, look for thick finger padding (“sausage” or split-finger rolls) and a thumb guard.
- Check the palm. A soft leather palm gives better grip and feel. Premium gloves use high-quality sheep leather.
- Comfort and weight. Lighter gloves feel better on the bat, and ventilation keeps your hands dry on hot days.
| Level | What to look for | Budget |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner / school | Good basic padding, comfortable fit | ₹600 – ₹1,200 |
| Club cricketer | Better finger and thumb protection, leather palm, lighter weight | ₹1,200 – ₹2,500 |
| Advanced / tournament | High-density protection, premium sheep-leather palm, best feel | ₹2,500 + |

- Dry them after every session in the shade, never in direct sun or on a heater.
- Wear cotton inner gloves. They soak up sweat and keep the palm fresh.
- Rotate two pairs if you bat often, so each pair dries fully.
- Don’t store them squashed at the bottom of your kit bag; it flattens the padding.
Complete your protection: cricket helmets · batting pads · thigh pads · English willow bats
Frequently asked questions
Which batting gloves should a right-handed batter buy?
Right-handed batters should buy “Right Hand” (RH) gloves. These have extra thumb protection on the top hand, which is the left hand for a right-hander.
How should batting gloves fit?
Snug, with your fingertips reaching the end of the glove fingers and no loose space, but not so tight that you can’t bend your fingers comfortably around the bat handle.
Do I need batting gloves for tennis-ball cricket?
They aren’t essential, but light gloves still help with grip and blisters. For leather-ball cricket, proper batting gloves are a must.
How often should batting gloves be replaced?
When the padding becomes flat, the palm wears through or the gloves no longer protect your fingers properly. Regular club batters often replace them every season.
