How to choose a pickleball paddle
- Weight. Light (under ~225 g) is fast at the kitchen line and kind to the arm. Mid-weight (225–240 g) suits most players. Heavy (240 g+) adds power but tires the arm.
- Core thickness. Around 13 mm gives more pop and power. 16 mm or more gives control, a softer feel and a bigger sweet spot.
- Face material. Carbon fibre gives control and spin. Fibreglass gives more pop. Graphite is light and crisp.
- Shape. Wide paddles have the biggest sweet spot (best for beginners). Elongated paddles give more reach and spin but a smaller sweet spot.
- Grip size. Most adults use about 4 1/8" to 4 1/4". If unsure, choose the smaller grip and add an overgrip.

Expert tips
- Don’t start with an expensive paddle. Learn the game first, then upgrade when you know whether you like power or control.
- Wear court shoes. Pickleball has lots of quick side steps; running shoes can roll your ankle.
- Use the right ball for your court: outdoor balls on outdoor courts, indoor balls indoors.
- Add an overgrip if the handle feels thin or slippery.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pickleball paddle for beginners in India?
A light, forgiving paddle with a wide face is best for beginners. The Prokick Rogue and Prokick Vortex (carbon fibre face) and the Hundred Spirit-X Wide are great first paddles under ₹2,000.
What weight pickleball paddle should I buy?
Light paddles (under about 225 g) are quick at the net and easy on the arm. Mid-weight paddles (225–240 g) suit most players. Heavier paddles (240 g+) add power but are slower to move.
13 mm or 16 mm core: which is better?
A thinner core (around 13 mm) gives more pop and power. A thicker core (16 mm or more) gives more control, a softer feel and a bigger sweet spot. Beginners and control players often prefer thicker cores; power players often like thinner ones.
What is the difference between indoor and outdoor pickleballs?
Outdoor balls are harder with smaller holes (usually 40), so they fly straight in the wind. Indoor balls are softer with bigger holes (usually 26) for better control on smooth floors.
Is carbon fibre better than fibreglass?
Carbon fibre faces usually give more control and spin and a more consistent feel. Fibreglass faces give more pop and power. Both are good; choose by the type of game you play.
Can I use a badminton or tennis court for pickleball?
Yes. A badminton court is almost the same size as a pickleball court, which is one reason pickleball is growing so fast in India. You will need a pickleball net set at the right height.
Do I need special shoes for pickleball?
Yes, court shoes with good side-to-side support are much safer than running shoes. Badminton or pickleball shoes with non-marking soles work well.
